1st Grader Saves Home From Fire
Jamie Weston, Grade one, Stewart Elementary saved her home from fire by remembering what she was taught in a Fire Prevention class taught by Captain Kurt Lathrop during Fire Prevention Week last October. She learned about EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home) and about Smoke Detectors. She went home and encouraged her parents to replace the batteries that had been removed from the smoke detectors in her home, because of false activation’s.
Last week, one of the detectors in her home sounded. Remembering her EDITH training, she promptly exited her home. Her family began to tease her, until they found a small fire in their kitchen. Jamie’s actions prevented her family’s home from being damaged or destroyed by fire.
Jamie is being honored at a school assembly at Stewart Elementary on Thursday, May 25, 2000 at 08:45 a.m. Please contact Captain Kurt Lathrop, or Captain Ernie Cave for further information. 741-3900.
